Around this time of the year there’s always a lot of speculation about the car that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will select to pace the Indy 500 in late May. So far, there’s no news from the speedway — and no news from any auto manufacturer either. It’s all just rumors at this point.

Soon enough we’ll know the answer when the official announcement is made, but I thought it might be fun to see what the CarStuff audience would choose. I’ve read articles that suggest the all-new Acura NSX or the 2013 SRT Viper as possible choices — although you should know the NSX recommendation is extremely unlikely. That’s because throughout the entire Indy 500 history (since 1911), the pace car for race day has always been a domestic (American) brand. Of course, Ford fans want the Mustang, Dodge supporters want the Challenger and there are plenty of Chevrolet enthusiasts that want to see the Camaro or the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray pace the field.

My money is on the C7 Corvette for this year’s race. Why? Well, there are lots of reasons, but the 450 horsepower V-8 and the long, intertwined Corvette and Indy 500 history make the most compelling arguments. Another reason: The Corvette always seems to be a popular choice at the track. The Corvette has paced the race 11 times — 1978, 1986, 1995, 1998, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2012. That’s more appearances than any other car in the track’s history. (Camaro is a distant second place with 7 appearances since 1967.)

The all-new Stingray just feels like the right pick for 2013, in my opinion. But I’m interested in what you think, too. What’s your pick for the 2013 Indianapolis 500 pace car? Let us know in the comment section below.
